It’s a common problem worldwide- gamers switch on their consoles only to find that their Xbox 360 does not work. There may be ominous signs that accompany this problem, usually in the form of blinking red lights. However, there are other problems as well that lead to your Xbox 360 stopping working. Today you are going to learn about these problems, what causes them and whether you can actually fix it and get gaming again.
When your Xbox 360 doesn’t work, it means that it has been affected by either of the following three major problems-
1. A faulty graphics processor unit (GPU) This is usually the most common error, and is typified by the well known blinking red lights that appear in the power ring of your Xbox 360.
2. The second error is still quite common. It is a faulty HD-DVD drive and means that your game discs cannot be read correctly.
3. The final error is a hard drive error. This can be one of the most damaging as your save game files can be lost, as well as any other data you had stored on your hard drive.
The cause of all these problems is the same in every single case- overheating causes malfunctions or damage to the components inside the case. Why does this occur? Because there is a lack of cooling devices inside your Xbox 360. There simply aren’t enough ventilation slots, heat sinks and fans to cool your Xbox 360 effectively when it is under maximum stress load.
The only good news is that it is possible to fix your Xbox 360 yourself. In order to do this you will need to use an Xbox 360 repair guide. This is a collection of videos that will show you how to carry out the repair method correctly and safely, including doing things such as disassembling the case, safely handling the components inside and testing once you have carried out the repairs.
If you are reading this article you may have the infamous three red lights error on your Xbox 360.
This normally happens with no warning, although having weird things appear on the screen and then freezing up are signs that it may be about to happen soon.
Why do the Three Red Lights occur?
The XBox 360 may have been rushed out to try to beat the PlayStation 3, or it could just be a design flaw due to them wanting to make a slim and modern console, but basically it happens because the two main processing chips on the motherboard – the CPU and the GPU, overheat. This article will help explain what the flashing red lights surrounding your power button mean, and what you could do to fix this problem.
Firstly depending on how many lights are flashing on the power button it can mean a few different things.
The most common error is the Xbox 360 3 Red lights error which is the most severe. If you have the 3 red lights error then it means you have a “General Hardware Error” and that one or more of the components inside the Xbox has broken.
2 red lights occur due to overheating, and sometimes culminate in the 3 Red Lights error.
4 red lights mean that the av cable is not being detected.
So is there anything you can do if you get 3 red lights on your Xbox 360?
Well the first thing you can do is phone Microsoft Customer Support and they will give you a series of tasks to try to fix it.
They will suggest things like removing the hard drive, turning the console off and back on, and then they will probably say that they will send you a repair cardboard box out, then you will need to put the broken console in the box and send it off to them.
This sounds OK in theory, but the repair work on your Xbox can take up to four weeks, and if you’re an avid gamer that is a long time to be without your XBox! Also what if it happens again? In general, the XBox consoles they send out are reconditioned units that have already had the Red Ring of Death!
The other possibility is to repair the problem yourself. Believe it or not, but it isn’t that hard to do! Please note that there are some dodgy “fixes” out there which entail the use of towels to overheat the console (causing other damage!) and re-solder the broken joins. Also some guides recommend soldering your XBox – something which I wouldn’t advise as this could void your warranty.
The Xbox 360 red power ring error, in which a series of blinking red lights appear in the power ring of your Xbox console, where there were once green lights, is a very common error for Xbox 360 gamers and their consoles, but is extremely distressing when it happens to your console. Today you are going to learn more about the Xbox 360 red circle, including what causes the problem, and what your best option is in order to fix your broken Xbox 360 that has been affected by the dreaded red ring of death.
The cause of the Xbox 360 red circle is excessive heat which has caused damage to components inside your console. This damage then leads to malfunctions and eventually Xbox 360 red power ring, which is used by your console to warn you about the problems affecting your console. Overheating is able to occur in the Xbox 360 because it does not have a particularly powerful cooling system, it lacks sufficient fans, heat sinks and heat channels, and a cramped internal case layout does not help either.
If you want to fix Xbox 360 red power ring problems then the best option you have is to actually fix your Xbox yourself. Although this may sound crazy at first, it actually is extremely easy to do. All you need are video repair instructions, an hour or two’s spare time, and basic tools such as screwdrivers, and you will be able to fix the Xbox 360 red circle.
You need video instructions if you want to fix the red ring of death, as only video will provide you with a sufficient level of detail and enable you to follow the step-by-step method you need to fix your Xbox 360. The best way to get these videos is in an Xbox 360 repair guide, which is a digital download of all the instructions you will need in video format. With one of these, it really is easy to fix your Xbox 360’s red circle problems permanently.
The Xbox 360 is an incredible gaming system, but doing all those incredible things can cause the system to overheat. This can lead to system failure, indicated by 3 red rings on the power button. This is also known as the Red Ring of Death, and unfortunately is experienced by 16% of Xbox 360 users. If you have just experienced the 3 red rings, don’t feel alone. Just go to the site listed at the bottom of the page and see reviews of the top 4 repair guides. These will save you $140, and have you up and gaming in about an hour.
If you haven’t had the RROD, then please read on and learn from my mistakes, and maybe save yourself the trouble!
1. The best medicine is prevention and fortunately, there are several ways to help prevent the 3 red lights. First and foremost, you’ll want to make sure your console is placed in an area where air can flow freely. Believe me, I learned the hard way, and if you keep your Xbox in a closed cabinet, you are asking for trouble, (that’s how my second one died). It’s best to take it out and let it get some air.
2. Make sure the Xbox is not located near a heat source like the side of a television, amplifier, computer, or any other electrical device, (and yes, that’s how my first one died). Its best to stand your console vertically, as this allows for maximum ventilation. The 360 is designed to “grab” your disc when you place it in the tray so you don’t have to worry about it falling out.
3. It can also be very beneficial to get your Xbox up off the ground. The main idea here is to get your power supply off the ground for maximum heat release. 4. Don’t put your Xbox on carpet. This will block the ventilation holes and will cause the system to overheat very quickly.
5. If you must place it horizontally on a shelf, be sure it is a ventilated shelf…something with holes in it. If you have the room, use an inexpensive wire mesh letter tray that you can buy just about anywhere, turn it upside down and place the unit on top.
6. Be careful about cooling fans. There are a lot on the market but some have been known to melt onto the console, causing permanent damage. Others, pulling power from the Xbox power supply, cause the unit to overheat trying to compensate. The only fans we can recommend would be those that have their own power cord.

The Xbox 360 is an awesome piece of gaming technology and it is no wonder that millions of units have been sold around the world, however the consoles have not been without their problems. The most infamous of these problems being the ‘dreaded red ring of death’ so named by the gaming community because of the usually green operational lights on the front of the unit turn red which can indicate a hardware failure.
Thousands upon thousands of the consoles have suffered from this failure and it seems that the number one cause is the consoles lack of ability to dissipate built up heat from the processing units. It is thought that the basic design of the unit may be to blame or that the heat sinks that are designed to aid in the removing of this heat are not large enough, either way this is a recognized problem and there is a couple of things you can do to avoid these overheating issues.
The first thing to do is to never operate the Xbox while it is in a confined space like inside a cupboard or tv unit. The console needs a good supply of fresh air from all angles and the cooler the better. Placing the console on an upturned box in the centre of the room is thought to be the best position to allow cool air to reach the cooling vents on all sides. Placing the unit on a carpeted floor is also not a good idea for the same reasons.
The next tip is a little bit crazy, but if you can avoid playing your console for hours at a time this will also prolong it’s error free life. I know, try telling that to someone that is halfway through their favorite game and it would be like telling them to cut their left arm off! Seriously though if you can limit you’re playing time in any one sitting to an hour or so with a couple of hours break in between you stand a better chance at never having an overheating problem with your Xbox.
If you are one of the unlucky ones that have a console that has already suffered from the red light error there is no need to stress, there is plenty of help available and it doesn’t have to mean that your playing days are over. There are a number of self-help resources available that make fixing your overheated console yourself an absolute breeze. With so many of these consoles having been affected by overheating the repair procedures available have been proven time and time again to be an effective way of fixing this problem for good.
XBox Problems are categorized by 1, 2, 3, or 4 Red Lights on the ring of light (power button), and certain error codes.
This article summarizes the reasons and possible solutions for these problems.
1 Red Light – indicates a specific Hardware Failure
Code E65 indicates a DVD Drive Error which could be caused by incorrect firmware, or a timeout.
Code E67 indicates a hard drive Error which could either be a problem with the XBox hard drive itself, or the the hard drive internal connection. Try using the XBox after taking the hard drive out to see if it works.
Code E68 indicates a hard drive Error which could either be a problem with the XBox hard drive itself, or the the hard drive internal connection. Try using the XBox after taking the hard drive out to see if it works. E68 could also indicate an Eprom error.
Code E69 indicates a hard drive Error which could either be a problem with the XBox Hard Drive itself, or the the hard drive internal connection. Try using the XBox after taking the hard drive out to see if it works.
Code E74 indicates an AV cable problem. Try using a different AV cable. It could also indicate a problem with the encoder chip.
Code E79: indicates a hard drive Error which could either be a problem with the XBox hard drive itself, or the the hard drive internal connection. Try using the XBox after taking the hard drive out to see if it works.
2 Red Lights -indicates Overheating
Leave your XBox to cool down for a few hours. Wait until it is properly cool before turning it on again and ensure that your XBox has sufficient ventilation around it, and that it’s fan is operating properly.
How to prevent overheating:
Make sure none of the ventilation holes on the console are blocked (don’t put it on a carpet, bed, or any other soft surface as this could block ventilation openings).
Also don’t put the power brick on a carpet.
Never put it in a confined space such as a TV Unit, unless it is fully ventilated.
Keep it away from any heat sources such as heaters, other electronic goods and direct sunlight.
Never put your XBox in a fridge or other cold place to cool down. Cold temperatures cause condensation to occur which could short out your console.
3 Red Lights (the red ring of death, RROD) – indicates a General Hardware Failure
This is the most common problem in the XBox 360. It was estimated that about 30% of all original consoles would get the Ring of Death. With the newer consoles the risk has dropped to about 6%.
Restart the system. If this doesn’t work, turn the console off and unplug all the AV and power cables, then firmly reconnect them all again and turn the console on again.
Next, turn the XBox off and remove the hard drive. After this turn it on again, and if the 3 red lights are no longer showing, turn it off again and put the hard drive back.
Also check that the power brick light is green even when the three lights on the power button are red.
Should you get the three red lights (Ring of death), your options are to have it fixed by Microsoft, or another repair center, or to fix it yourself. See below for more info.
4 Red Lights – indicates that the AV cable cannot be detected
Try disconnecting and then reconnecting the AV cable to the Xbox console.
Try wiping the metal part that plugs into the console with a dry cloth.
Try using a different AV cable.
